POLICE BEATS UP UNION LEADERS

4 Apr 2018

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is disgusted by the reports that the Zimbabwe Republic Police today beat-up suspended trade union leaders from the energy sector who were attending a hearing at the company premises.

The ZRP pounced on the union leaders at ZESA offices during the hearing process for some of the employees who are being charged for participating in a collective job action against corruption at the parastatal. The assaulted union leaders suffered serious injuries. They were detained at Harare Central Police and were later released into the custody of their lawyers. They will appear in court tomorrow facing charges of disorderly conduct.

The ZCTU reiterates that what is happening at ZESA is nothing but anti-union and pure victimization of trade unionists.

We strongly condemns the police brutality as it is contrary to the Constitution of Zimbabwe. We also call upon the police not to interfere in purely labour issues and leave them to competent institutions.
