The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is worried by Press reports of escalation of politically motivated violence incidents, in particular arsons, that are reminiscent of the June 2008.
These gory incidents, the latest being the arson attack on Tendai Nyachuru, a kraal head in Mazoe, come at a time when the election season is encroaching upon us and instead of Zimbabweans looking forward to choosing national leaders of their choice freely, they are dreading the whole process.
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) is saddened by the death of 43 people who perished on Wednesday along Harare to Chirundu Highway when a King Lions bus veered off the road and crushed into a tree.
The death of the 43 people has left a huge hole in many families as some of them were breadwinners as cross boarder traders who were working hard to fend for their families. The survivors of this horrific accident will require extensive systematic counseling for them to get over this traumatic experience.
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) condemns in the strongest terms the locking out of former Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) employees at Bulawayo Khami Depot who were pushing for dialogue with their former employer who has not paid their pensions and terminal benefits for 35 years.
It is highly shocking and arrogant for the ZUPCO management to, instead of cooperating, decide to shut out the workers despite it owing the affected and disenfranchised former employees, some of whom are too old to work.

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) condemns in the strongest terms reports emanating from the media that there are attempts by some board members of the National Social Security authority (NSSA) to remove President Peter Mutasa from the board.
The move to remove President Mutasa is not surprising because he has become a stumbling block to those at NSSA who were used to looting workers money and making questionable ‘investment’ decisions without questions being asked.
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) condemns in the strongest terms reports emanating from the media that there are attempts by some board members of the National Social Security authority (NSSA) to remove President Peter Mutasa from the board.
The move to remove President Mutasa is not surprising because he has become a stumbling block to those at NSSA who were used to looting workers money and making questionable ‘investment’ decisions without questions being asked.
The ZCTU is shocked and saddened by the High Court judgment that has ruled that workers who lost their jobs following the July 17 2015 Supreme Court ruling that allowed employers to terminate contracts on notice, will have no right to get retrenchment packages in retrospect.
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) condemns in strongest terms the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Prisca Mupfumisa’s conduct of interfering in social dialogue processes by directly contacting workers in the civil service on the issue of the 2016 bonuses.
The Minister is reportedly sending officials ostensibly on a ‘survey’ to find out whether civil servants want housing stands or money as payment for 2016 bonuses, ignoring the pleas from unions who represent civil servants.
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions condemns the appalling xenophobic attacks directed against foreigners living and working in South Africa by locals.
The attacks though a symptom of economic malaise and lack of job creation by South African authorities should not be tolerated. The ZCTU calls upon the South African government to put in place practical policies that safeguard migrants and bring a lasting solution to the ever resurfacing xenophobic attacks.
